Dear PPPC –
Do you ever turn on the news and think, “What in the world is happening?” It happens to me sometimes. I’m guessing it happens to you, too.
Often, I begin my daily time of prayer with words written by someone else. A hymn. A poem. A song. A devotional. I start with someone else’s words, then turn to my own. It’s a helpful place to begin, and a reminder that others are praying, too. That while this moment is between God and me, there are others who are also turning to the living God seeking comfort or guidance or discernment.
Recently I’ve begun with a song, written by musician and songwriter Ben Rector. He is a secular artist. He is also a man of faith and I’ve enjoyed his music for the last two decades.
Here are the lyrics to his short piece, Make Something Beautiful. I’d recommend clicking here to listen to it, as well as read it.
Please let me make something beautiful
A thing that reminds us there’s good in the world
A thing that reminds us there’s still something out there
worth fighting for
‘Cause it feels like the world has gone crazy
Spinning faster and cheaper than ever before
And it feels like there’s nobody caring that it’s getting worse
Ooh-ooh, let it be something wonderful
Ooh-ooh, let it be something beautiful
Please let me make something beautiful
A thing that reminds us there’s good in the world
–Ben Rector, Make Something Beautiful, Brand New Album
If you turned on the news this week, or maybe you received some news and you don’t know where to begin your prayer life…maybe this song will be helpful. Maybe it won’t. Sharing that it might lighten the load.
See you at the Seafood Festival tomorrow and in Church on Sunday!
Be gentle with one another,
Pastor Molly
